COCKFIELD OBSERVATORY

The English village of Cockfield, in Suffolk, is home to a numbered IAU facility (International Astronomical Union Observatory 480) operated by myself: the dedicated UK amateur astronomer and astronomy author Martin Mobberley.

I am a former BAA President and Goodacre medallist. In 1997 the IAU officially named asteroid 7239 as 'Mobberley' in recognition of my services to amateur astronomy.

I have completed 10 astronomy books; 7 for Springer, as well as 3 children's space books. Two of the Springer titles are available in Italian. My 7th Springer book, about the Caldwell Objects, is due out in late 2009.

My observatory is devoted to obtaining high quality images of an unusually diverse variety of astronomical objects. My prime imaging targets in recent years have been comets, but I also capture supernovae, gamma-ray bursters, novae, asteroids, planets, deep sky objects, unusual variable stars & cataclysmic variables, meteor storms and total solar eclipses!

Some of my results, as a team member of the BAA and TA organisations, have led to mentions on professional IAU circulars.

Appearances on IAUCs

CCDs and webcams have transformed my hobby from being a tiring battle with the cold and damp and photographic chemicals (in the 1980s) to a truly impressive night-time experience. My Paramount ME/Celestron 14 telescope is shown below. This is primarily used for comet and supernova imaging. Only a tiny fraction of the thousands of images I have taken over the past 30 years are stored here!

All images/text © Martin Mobberley 2008. I am happy for any of my images to be freely used, by other astronomers, as long as I am consulted and the images are credited to me.

BELOW: My Supernova book, Cataclysmic Cosmic Events book and my latest title, 'The Caldwell Objects & How to Observe Them' (due to be published in October 2009) .

Supernova discoverer Ron Arbour comments on my fourth Springer book 'Supernovae and How to Observe Them':-

"This book is excellent. It provides plenty of information for anyone to start SN patrolling. It contains a wealth of information that has taken patrollers many years to acquire, and sometimes the painful way. I wish that I'd had a copy of this book when I started searching 29 years ago. I could have surpassed Zwicky's record by now."
